Modernism in art and literature: By Mathies Damm-Henichsen * please note that the pictures may be out of place, we tried everything to make them go where we wanted them to go. Modernism started in the 1920’s and its was the description of an artist thinking freely and breaking limit. These could be painters, writers and singers. It expressed their thoughts and feelings, and this made it possible for people to see themselves in paintings. Their own feelings and thoughts, in a picture. Modernism was also pushed forward by the increasing amount of realism and impressionism (“Literary Modernism”). When modernism started with painters, it was a way to express yourself, and you spoke the truth. Even though this was known as the golden age, painters were beginning to adapt more the realism and impressionism. The thing that made modernism so popular in art, was because it inspired people, and people could reflect their own thoughts in the paintings. The same happened for music composer, but while people would buy abstract images, there wasn't much of a market for abstract music. But art wasnt about the money, as music composer Aaron Copland described it “The new sound was flowing, open, energetic, and even inspiring” ("Aaron Copland." Newsmakers). This pushed people into making music that inspired themselves, which eventually led to the genre Jazz. In literature people such as F. Scott Fitzgerald, were trying to put people in the roles he meant they should be. This meant women could be equal to men, and their behavior was different than normal. His books was usually about people that were starting a new life, and one of his greatest books were “The Great Gatsby”. It didn't sell well at the start, but now its one of the greatest novel in American history (Fitzgerald, F. Scott). Today “The Great Gatsby” is known as one of the greatest american novels to date. |
